Parent Volunteers Needed in the Media CenterThe Media Center is working on inventory this month. We are in desperate need of about 20 volunteer hours (the # of volunteers doesn't matter) during the week of May 19-23, to put Media Center shelves in exact order (we call this shelf reading). Qualifications are minimum. Volunteers need to be able to read the spine label on books and arrange decimal numbers in order. Time is flexible, 7:30-3:30 any day Monday to Friday that week. People can come and go individually, or as a group. Shelf reading is tedious but gratifying for those of us who crave order. NC School of Science and MathThe North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is now accepting applications for admission. NCSSM is the country’s first residential public high school and is located in Durham, NC. The challenging curriculum focuses on mathematics and the sciences while significantly integrating the arts and humanities. The enrollment standards are demanding, as this unique environment attracts the state’s most accomplished young minds. Governor's School Application InformationGovernor's school is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically, intellectually, and artistically gifted students in the nation. Current eleventh graders who are gifted in academics or performing/visual arts and tenth graders gifted in performing or visual arts may apply. Selected students spend six weeks at the residential program, which is held at Salem College and Meredith College. Tuition, room, and board are paid for by the state of North Carolina. Wake Forest Public Library Geneaology ProgramWake Forest Library is having a geneaology program for teens. Only teens can participate. This will be a 3 part course: 1. Hear stories of how one person discovered fascinating things about her family when she started her family research. 2. Learn how to organize family history into something you can use to create a geneaology. 3. Learn how to use Heritage Quest, an online resource that the Wake County libraries offer. Pre-Algebra AcademyWake school's Lifelong Learning program is offering a pre-algebra academy course for students in sixth to ninth grades. The course will be offered from July 17 to July 27 at Sanderson High School at 5500 Dixon Dr. and costs $399. The program is also offering an SAT mastery prep class on Mondays and Wednesdays starting June 28 at Sanderson.
